Interface and Interaction Design between Humans and Highly Intelligent Machines/Systems

Our group promotes interdisciplinary research called "Smart Mechanano System (SMS)," which is based on the interface (media) design between huamans and highly intellignet machines/systems.

Research field 1

Human-Symbiotic Smart Mobility

For various types of mobility devices to perform safe and secure autonomous movement in human-coexistence spaces, this group studies on smart navigation technologies including environment measurement and intention estimation based on probabilistic robotics, proximity and mutual concessive movement control, and human interface. In recent years, we have also applied our research to automated delivery and guidance assistance using autonomous mobile robots and personal mobility.
Research field 2

Functional Material-based Smart Device

This group studies on smart devices such as soft skin sensors, backdrivable, high-power actuators, and energy-efficient suction cup mechanisms using functional materials such as magnetorheological fluids and permanent magnet elastomers. We aim to construct a new interdisciplinary research area of "Mechanism x Material x AI (Control)," and recently, we explore the fusion with biology and bionics.
Research field 3

AI-based Human Sensing and Support

This group studies on intelligent information processing technologies, ranging from estimation of gaze and body posture to estimation of emotion, burden, and situation recognition using biometric information and body movementst. We are also working on building "behavior change technology" (sports and daily life) and "virtual agent technology" (car driving and machine operation) to support cognition, judgment, and operation, based on the estimated human condition, skills, and characteristics.
