Digital Innovation: Transforming Society, Industry, Economy, and Local Communities

As digital technology revolutionizes society, we are researching 5G/Beyond 5G/6G, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud robotics, wireless communication & power supply, and information society design. We invite you to collaborate with us and explore these exciting new frontiers with fresh ideas.

VISION: "ICT as Social Infrastructure" and "ICT for Experience"

We envision future ICT (Information and Communication Technology) serving two primary roles: "ICT as Social Infrastructure" and "ICT for Experience." In a world where competitive advantages are defined by vast and diverse streams of data (time-series data from sensors and other sources) collected in the cloud, we aim to drive significant industrial, economic, and social transformations by utilizing stream data from fields such as environmental monitoring, urban planning, civil engineering, architecture, agriculture, healthcare, and resource management. As Peter Drucker observed that steam engines led to the emergence of railways, which in turn gave rise to mail services, banks, and newspapers, we believe that ICT will contribute to the development of new industries and social systems over time. Our mission is to address domestic and global social challenges and contribute to a social system that supports human intellectual activities by harnessing the power of "ICT as Social Infrastructure" and "ICT for Experience."

RESEARCH

To build the information infrastructure necessary for realizing "ICT as Social Infrastructure" and "ICT for Experience," we are re-evaluating the foundations of current technologies and aiming to construct a new framework. We also strive to propose innovative techniques for utilizing next-generation networks and computing environments. To achieve this, we are advancing research and development from perspectives such as "developing new network architectures" and "demonstrating unique application prototypes." Specifically, we are investigating IoT/DX/big data, sensor networks, wireless communication, wireless power supply, information society design, and social implementation (bridges, agriculture, healthcare, smart grids, etc.). Furthermore, we actively collaborate with various companies, institutions, and universities both domestically and internationally to advance diverse research projects and explore cutting-edge networking technologies.

MLAB STYLE

One of the significant events in our lab is the MLAB Research Forum, held during winter for our sponsor companies. Demonstrations at these events represent essential milestones in our research journey. In addition to leading the Communications and Information Network Association of Japan (CIAJ), Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center, Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium, Broadband Wireless Forum, Digital Society Design Council, we actively collaborate with external organizations and conduct intensive research, holding overnight training camps when appropriate.
